Hank Hopkins is the owner, operator, and lead floor layer at Kwatna Flooring. Born and raised in Bella Coola, BC, Hank moved to Victoria at 18 and landed a job at a local hardwood flooring company. It didn't take long for him to discover a love for the work, and he spent the next 20 years learning every part of the trade, from sanding and refinishing to repairs and installation.
In 2016, Hank stepped away from flooring and he got his Class 1 driving license. He spent time driving a truck in Alberta and Northern BC while starting a family. But flooring stuck with him, and by January 2024, he was ready to take the leap and start something of his own. Kwatna Flooring was born.
Hank's attention to detail, strong work ethic, and genuine love for good craftsmanship have made the transition seamless. He specializes in hardwood, sanding, refinishing, and repairs, but also works with laminate and vinyl plank flooring. Alongside his wife Sarah, who handles the behind the scenes work that keeps the business running, Hank is building something the two of them are proud of, one floor at a time.
WHY KWATNA?
A Connection to Home
The name Kwatna comes from Kwatna Inlet, a beautiful estuary located about 35 kilometers southwest of Bella Coola. Long before colonization, this land was home to Hank's ancestors. Over the years, Kwatna has held many chapters of history. At one point, it was the site of a logging camp. Today, it's protected parkland under the BC government, though reserve land still remains there as well.
For years, Kwatna was also used by the Nuxalk people as a youth camp. Hank attended one of these camps himself, spending a week living out on the land alongside his classmates, and the grizzlies who called it home too. He's returned to Kwatna Bay several times since, and every visit brings back that same connection he felt as a kid.
Naming the business Kwatna Flooring was a way to carry that connection forward, into every home Hank works in.
